Integrate the shelter before the project is frozen
Structural grids, parking layouts, ramps, entrances, utility rooms, ventilation paths and accessible routes can all interact with a protective structure. Resolving these interfaces early generally gives the design team more options than adding requirements after architecture and engineering systems are fixed.
Existing residential buildings are a different problem
For an existing building or residential complex, the first task is source data and feasibility: available basement or parking areas, ownership and access, structural conditions, engineering systems, resident routes and any possible separate site.
Developer project inputs
- planned resident and user capacity;
- construction stage and design status;
- parking and basement layouts;
- site and utility constraints;
- required completion stage for the shelter;
- procurement model and responsibility split between design, construction and supply.
