Separate day and night scenarios
Teaching buildings, laboratories, libraries and dormitories can have different occupancy patterns. A useful project brief should identify which groups are present, where they are located and which shelter routes are realistic for each part of the campus.
Campus questions to resolve early
- peak occupancy by building or zone;
- dormitory residents and night-time staffing;
- distance between buildings and proposed shelters;
- accessible routes and vertical movement;
- existing basements or other candidate spaces;
- available sites for separate structures;
- engineering connections and phased implementation options.
One central shelter may not be the best operational model
For a dispersed campus, route length can be as important as nominal shelter capacity. Early planning should compare centralised and distributed options before the project is narrowed to one solution.
