Small shelters without a water-supply connection
For the referenced scenario covering a protective structure or dual-purpose structure with capacity of 20 people or fewer and no water-supply connection, the DBN provision uses 2 litres of drinking water per person per day in portable containers.
Projects above 20 people
For the referenced scenario above 20 people, the emergency drinking-water reserve in tanks is calculated at 3 litres per person per day.
Projects in this capacity range can also require an autonomous emergency water-supply arrangement when supplied from external or internal networks, unless another permitted project solution is used.
Normal network consumption is a different calculation
Where an operating external water network is available, the DBN uses separate consumption provisions. Those values should not be confused with the emergency drinking-water reserve stored in containers or tanks.
A complete water and sanitary design can also include technical water, sanitation, pumps, drainage, taps, water quality, tank maintenance and facility-specific requirements.
How to use the reserve number in early planning
- confirm project capacity and the applicable DBN scenario;
- state the planning period explicitly;
- keep drinking-water reserve separate from technical and sanitary demand;
- identify whether a functioning external network is part of the project basis;
- treat the online result as a project input, not a complete engineering solution.
